With the economic still unstable and recovering (this is what I keep hearing from the Government) most employees tries to multi-tasking. In fact, in a lot of organisation today, we are expected to multi-tasking so we can help the company to save money hiring another staff to do aspecific job.
We multi-task to show our boss how good we are at managing a few task at the same time or how effective we are at joggling our responsibilties. We mutli-task so show the bosses that we are valueable to the company and when it's time to down-size, we will be save because we can perform tasks completed by 3 employees.
The truth...multi-tasking is disaster waiting to happen. Why, because you need to manage a few tasks with 100% concentration and expectation. It's quite impossible to be detail and organise. Somehow you will miss out something or the task would not be satisfactory. You won't be able to focus your fullest attention and with the fast pace technologies and changes, it's impossible to be perfect at your work if you have to multi-task.
Bear in mind most of us who multi-task don't have an easy job. We are doing finance one minute, answering calls the next minute as a receptionist role and a HR manager preparing offer letter and follow up on staff details. Then is off to the bank or follow up with your IT department on the latest product development. People are amaze with this type of people but the truth is sooner or later they will make mistake. Sometimes huge mistake that will cost company more time and money which we can't afford at the current economic situation.
Multi-tasking also mean less time for yourselve and your family. Less time to rest your mind and body and having to work until wee hours trying to clear the backlogs. If you're being paid 6 figures, maybe it's worth it but most of us here are under-paid. This usually happens in Asian countries. People are willing to accept less. When will we change?
