iStrategy 2010 - day 1

I must say that this is another conference where there actually some really good knowledge, tips and ideas for our business. The other were Google and WebAsia2010 which I attend a few months ago. But this one is the most rewarding of all.

Blake Chandlee from facebook shared about how facebook connecting to the world and what revolutionary means to them. Games can connect to friends in a very interesting way. Communities connect to their friends through facebook games. Their model: Efficiency, Effectiveness and Scale.

Kathleen Tan talked about how AirAsia build a successful social media and how they interact with their fans. She talked about integrating print ad with social media. This is something my company is doing too but not very successful yet. To make social media works, The Company has to embrace it too. Pick what suits you and don't pick everything. So true.

Driving ROI and growing our brand through social media gave me an insights that there are still a lot of challenges we are facing in SEA. Many brand value still top down. One of the speakers talked about measurable marketing to so true in today context. Keynote take away is social media is a feature, not a destination (Haresh Khoobchandani, CMO Consumer and Online APAC).

The workshop I attended was a bit disappointing. I might have wrong expectation but I did took away some knowledge the comparison between standard display ad vs video ad. If your video ad cost 5-10 times more than standard ad, don't bother to proceed coz you can't get ROI.

Ogilvy talked about Muslim market was really interesting and relevant to our business. I always believe FMCG is the way to go and our advertisers include the B2B should target Muslim consumers. It's so true that Muslim market is under serve and they are 'The Futurist'. Muslim make up to 11% of world's populations and 52.5% of the populations are under 25 years old. Stay away from stereotype or conservative approach to reach the net generation. Lesson learnt: Not true that only Chinese advertisers have ad spending power or only B2B have the big budget. In fact they must cater for Muslim market.

Shariah compliance importance:
  1. Food & beverage
  2. Fashion & beauty care
  3. Airline
  4. Hotel
  5. Travel
  6. Financing / loan
  7. Insurance
What will work:
  • Help other
  • Be better Muslims
  • Positive and Progressive
CIMB Islamic Success: (Nokia shared similar success)
  • Inclusive
  • Muslim friendly value
  • progressive & innovative
  • Collective
Lastly I like that the speaker said brand doesn't need to have Islamic symbol to tap into Muslim market. So true and now I have I know there are a lot of people agreed with me! Hehehehe..

Conference in Singapore

I finally arrived at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel. This day started off fairly intense too. Arriving at the office this morning and straight away I had to settle a few papers work and meeting supplier for our new office.

After that was brainstorming with my sales director and marketing manager to our 2011 campaigns and company KPI. That took up till lunch time. I was so hungry by then and went to Singapore Chicken Rice Shop. The outlet we went serve really nice chicken rice. Not all places retain the same quality though...maybe is because of the francise.

Lunch over and back to office to catch up as much as I can before leaving for airport. By then the rain has started. Funny thing was all the way to the airport, I experience several raining condition. First, it was light rain falls, then it was thunder storm that my taxi driver can't see the road clearly. I don't think he can see past 1 meter. After that, back to light rain and then it stopped, just clouldy sky. After a few minutes, it's heavy rain again follow by few rain drops and stop totally. Just I was about the reach the airport, it heavy downpour again and by then I started to worried. But just before I reach the airport departure hall, the rain stop.

At the low cost airport, each time I wanted to check in for my trip to Singapore, it always brought me to different counter. This time, check-in through kiosk. Mind you, there are a lot of passengers don't know how to use the kiosk yet. People tend to kelam-kabut when they face something new. It's not easy to try something new for some people. After that, the gate has change too. The new area has completed and it's quite nice. Wider.

While waiting for my flight, there was a group of guests, I think they are on tour and they are so loud! I guess they must be excited to go somewhere. The flight was delay slightly due to the rain. During the journey to Singapore, it was raining with lots of cloud and lightings. It somehow remain me of a horror movie. Thumbs up for the Captain because he really avoid the heavy cloud the best he can. We basically went around the clouds. Touch down at Changi airport at 8.10pm.

After crossing the custom, I had to face a long queue waiting for taxi. It took me 50minutes until it was my turn to board a taxi. The elderly uncle still there ashering passengers to the taxi. I wonder if he's working to pass time or he has no one to depend on and therefore having to work at his age. He looks like he's 80 years old, but he's still look very healthy and strong. Strong than most people twice his age.

I arrived at the hotel almost 10pm. There were a lot of guests at the lobby area and dining area. Check-in by a front desk whose English is quite a bit to understand. I think she's either Koren or Japanese. I had to cut short my stay here by a day but since my reservation is through the organiser, front desk will get back to me tomorrow.

The room was really nice and cosy. Bathroom is clean and amenities are well prepared. Overall the room is really nice. View from the room was excellent too, although I'm not much the type who needs view from a room. I told Sugar I won't eat but in the end I was so hungry I order room service. I had spaghetti Bolognese. It arrived just after I took shower and the meal was 5 stars standard. I finished everything and the plate was squeaky clean. I even ate the bread. Even the bread was nice. I finished my enjoyable meal in my room with a cup of instant coffee. By then I don't mind the lousy coffee because I was contented.

Now I'm watching cable TV while entering my blog. Tomorrow I will have to wait up at 6am so I can go for breakfast at 7am before the iStrategy conference starts. I am hoping to network and contact from other attendees and leads for my company. Based on the schedule, it's going to be fairly tied. It's a good thing I stay in this hotel.

Can't Sleep and Year End Sales 2010 Starts Today!

I must be too tired or over slept? Nah...I'm not over sleep. Somehow, I only sleep for 2 hours just now and I suddenly woke up at 2.45am. I went around my house checking for cracks on my walls because the unit above mine is doing renovation. And I'm checking for crack lines in the middle of the night. I'm so bored and sleepless.

I've surfing the net for 3 hours now and it's 6am now. Today I'm going to start jogging...after soooo many nagging from him. I know he wants me to stay healthy and I'm gain so much of weigh that I don't even like how I look in the mirror. But nope, I'm not moody or low self exteam. I want to do it for me so I won't ended up in a hospital or getting one of those lifestyle deseases.

Today is the start of Malaysia's Year End Sales 2010. Normally people will start shopping time for christmas preparation. Everything is so expensive nowadays and everyone is on a tight budget. I'm not sure if I will be buying much things this year. I'm saving up for a holiday and to pay off my debts. Yup, living in urban will make you end up with financial burden. So, sales or no sales, it's not a spending time. I'll just do window shopping and I really need to stay away from book stores.

Farewell for my colleague

Today is the last day of one of my colleagues and everyone in the office organised a pizza lunch in the office. The atmosphere was pretty cool and everyone enjoy the small gathering. Most of the staff chip in and join the gathering. My colleague who arranged this order 8 pizzas and chips. Unfortunately there was a messed up and the delivery guy send regular pizzas instead of large pizza. Additional pizzas were sent after we finished lunch.

Overall the pizza was nicer than the Hut's pizza. The portion was just nice for everyone and our stomach were not over-full. After lunch, there was the usual photo sessions for remembrance. Some of the guys did creative posts too while the girls are, well, polite.

I wish my colleague all the best in his career. He will be missed by everyone and the management. Even until the very last day, he is very responsible and still have lots of passion on the work. He try his best to hand over properly and help in any ways he can until the very last day. This type of employee is very hard to come by and even my boss praise him when he was here in the office yesterday. This is so unlike the previous staff who resign. It was so unpleasant and I hope I don't have that type of employee anymore. Wasting my time to defend her and given her so many opportunities. The sad thing is that she never sees anything as her problem or wrong doing. She can't see her weakness and goes all the way up to complaint. This will only reflect more of her weakness. She didn't realise that by going up the chain of command, she's putting those who support her in the bad light. Management is not stupid and we know who are her supporters. However, we are professionals and we only see the work and performance not personal.

After this, I'm hiring a HR manager for this company. It will be a good moral support for the staff. Wish I could hire earlier but managing the operations cost is my priority. No matter what happens, my staff must get their salary on time.

Getting ready for holiday

Aahhhh, finally I can look forward to a nice holiday very soon. Am planning to go Europe for a winter holiday during Christmas season. After struggling to build and strengthen the company since last 2 years, it's time for a break and get away from here. No more checking emails and chasing for sales revenue or follow up with product development for 2 weeks.

Now, the team are strong and independent and very capable. There're still some room for improvement in sales but I can see sales team are more motivated and more team work and communications since last week. This is a very good sign. Am posting vacancy for sales staff again to get more hard working and $$$ drive staff to join the company. Some of the sales even have appointments at night. I'm impress.

Me and my coffee

I love coffee. Period. However, I try not to drink to much caffeinated drink but sometimes it's best to enjoy it with a good book or on a rainy day.

Last Saturday I finally bought coffee maker for the grained coffee beans my dad brought for me. It has been in the shelf for over a month. The aroma was so divine and filled my home. So yesterday I had a nice cup of coffee and a good novel to keep me company after dinner. I still have several books to go so more coffee to keep me company.

Man in the Mirror

Sometime people only see the bad in everyone and not the good. It's always a pleasure to see pets who are always happy to see their owners back home. My areas have quite a lot of owners with dogs and they really take good care of them. Unfortunately I can't have dog in the house due to my bf's religion. I'm not a cat person, not because I don't like cat, it's just that I don't know how to take of them. They seem to be more fragile than dogs.

Last weekend I went to a pet shop in Subang and was surprise to see a pit bulls terrier locked in a cage. If it's a puppy, it's still big enough but this dog is over a year old. That's animal cruelty. The guy was sleeping in the cage and for his size and age, he needs a lot of space to roam around, not in a small cage. In Malaysia, a lot of dogs for sales are not properly care. Just put them in a small cage and leave them there for months until someone come to buy them and take them home. Have you ever wonder what happen to these animals if no one bought them? You will be surprise.

Weekend was much better after a lousy week but I know it's going to gets better from here. Less gossip in the office and more healthy working environment. For people who doesn't like the current culture, there's always an option - leave the company. That's what I always used.

Eating at Tenji

Just finished our company team building at Tenji Restaurant at Mont Kiara. It's been a while since our last gathering for the staff and they have been working really hard. I was so surprised to see one of my staff who's serving her notice there.

[this section has been deleted. For staff who's reading my blog, well, this is my personal blog and I'm damm sure going to write whatever I like in my space. If you don't like to read, please leave or you can see my lawyer.]

Another thing I don't like is people taking me for a ride. I'm not someone who can tolerate anything, anytime, all the time. I've giving but it must be a give and take. As a conclusion, this is not a good day and I'm hoping my weekend will be better. Time to go home and distress.

Peaceful Saturday

With all the paper work completed and ready to go, I'm on standby mode for my meeting next week. It will be a full day meeting in Singapore and I hope I'll have some time to do a bit of shopping. Mainly to buy present for my bf. More like a belated birthday present. Every time I asked him what he wants, he will just said anything or giving me a totally impossible mission aka no need.

After 3 weeks of work, today I get to rest at home and enjoy myself, peacefully. I think I'll go for a massage later and it's time for a hair cut before I look like a hairy weirdo. I've some reading to catch up because my books are lying there unattended. Cooking to do and prepare dinner for love ones. hmmm...it's good to do something I like. Can't wait for family holiday in December.

Proton Inspira Unveiled!

Proton has finally unveiled Proton Inspira, the waja replacement model and booking can be made now. The car is expected to be on the road end of 2010 so this should be a good present for the coming Christmas.

Proton Inspira is developed from a Mitsubishi Lancer's technology. Choices from 4B10 1.8 liter engine with a 5speed manual, a Mitsubishi 4B10 1.8 liter engine with a 6speed virtual ratio CVT gearbox or the 2.0 liter 4B11 engine with the same CVT transmission and added steering column paddle shifters.

Proton Holdings is expected to sell 1,600 units of the new sedan every month. It will be officially launched on 10 Nov 2010. Price ranging from RM79,888 to RM95,000 tentatively. Well, for a 2.0 engine, the price is reasonable for local market. This also mean that Proton Waja will be phased out. Available in white, red, silver or black, the Proton Inspira is open for booking at any Proton edar dealer with a deposit of RM1,000. For early birds, Proton is giving away 2 years (50,000km) free service package worth RM1,658 including parts and labor for customers who made booking by 15 November 2010. The cars are expected to deliver before 31 December 2010.

Well, I know my friend would like the 2.0 engine but I think price will be a problem.

Planning for holiday

I think I haven't go to any vacation since last year. I mean a proper vacation where I just relax and enjoy my time, meeting new people and see new culture. I used to go holiday at least once a year.

Come to think of it, work and lack of money are the main reasons I haven't take a holiday. Don't you think it's so expensive nowadays to go for a holiday? Even back-packing can cost up to a few thousands, and anything with sensible hotel and tour packages will cost around RM10,000. Each year, flight charges increased and so as hotel prices.

I guess that's why people only travel to nearby countries or countries with lower currency than Malaysia. I plan to go to Italy...the place I dream of going since my school days. I'm hoping I can go next year. If not, then it's back to Sydney again.

Wah...it's October already

My goodness! Time flies so fast. I feel like Chinese New Year just ended recently and now it's October. Come to think of it, I haven't accomplish much personally. Work has been keeping me very busy throughout this year and I even misses a few of my friends' gathering. So sorry guys! Will try to plan something for the coming Christmas.

Luckily I have YOU to keeping me from going 'banana'. Have I say thank you recently? I have to admit I sometimes forget personal life when I'm rushing my work and keep chit-chat with you. Whenever I need someone to talk or release my stress, you're always a good listener. No matter how I 'torture' you, you remain calm and cool.

Well this year I managed to located back a lot of my long lost friends through fb and everyone looks so different now. Looking back the golden days, everyone looks so nerdy. Now, everyone has established in their career and marriages. It's good to see that everyone still find times to gather for food once a while.

Economic this year has been slow compare to last year. Maybe we felt the crisis this year. That's part of the reasons I have to work so hard this year so everyone will have salary end of the month. Hopefully next year will be a better year and I can go holiday.

It's cold and wet season!

Today is really freezing in the office. Even my seat is cold. Most of the time, my table is the warmest or at room temperature. Our office seatings is open concept so everyone eats together, including the managers. In the middle and near the main entrance, that's the coldest area. I think people can cool a Coke naturally... but then again it will be too cold to drink.

My spot in at the other corner of the office and there's no centralized air-con on near me. It's a window seat so I get the daily sunshine during the dry season and closest to the lightings and thunders during the raining season. Today it's so cold that I had to make Milo every one or two hours. No more coffee for me or I'll end up a owl during the night.

First try in making spring roll

This few days keeps raining and is quite cold at home during the nights. There was a heavy pour yesterday evening and I was soaking wet by the time I reached home. After shower, I took some vitamins so I don't catch cold or fall sick the next day.

With the cold weather, I felt hungry so I ended up making my very first spring roll. The peeling and slicing were no fun. I had to chop lots onions because my mom put that in, as I recalled. Then slicing the carrots, bean curd and sweet turnip (sengkuang). Since I don't cook everyday, so it took me a few minutes to get everything prepared and down to the wok for a stir fried.

Everyone I know normally cook the ingredients separately. The way people usually eats is scope some of each ingredients and put in the spring roll wrapper. Me, I'm just too lazy to do this so I put everything in the wok and cook them together for few minutes. Then I just put the ingredients into the wrap one by one until everything finished.

I ate 2 and some kept in the fridge. It tasted similar likes my mom's but I accidentally put in too much pepper. Arrggh... I can feel the spice in my mouth after eating the spring roll. This weekend I'm going to make again...with less peppers, of course.

Recently, I have learnt to be more patience and relax. Cooking definitely require both because the dish needs to go through all the steps before I can eat, no shortcut. I'm more relax too because I only focus on task in front of me. Sugar is my tester and so far OK. I just have to make sure he's 'alive' after eating my food.

Selamat Hari Raya

I hope is not too late to wish all my friends Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Maaf Zahir Batin. Raya started last week and like usual, there are a lot of delicious food. It's all about food and traditional cooking. I'm happy to see that all my friends are still visiting each other and we get to eat a lot. Some of my Chinese friends can't take the spicy but they still love it. I guess all the makcik makcik are happy that their food were the main topic. With my family visiting and Hari Raya, now I have to start focus on loosing weight again before we celebrate Christmas follow by Chinese New Year. I bet all the slimming centers are busy now.

Friendship or Love

This video is just so funny and I got it from my dad. I'm amaze that at over 70+ my dad is very internet savvy. He normally google or go to youtube for his favourite songs... well, oldies or ever-green songs.

This video is about a friendship between a dog and a dolphin, taken from a movie. I wonder why I've never seen this movie before. The dog is just so adorable and the dolphin is so smart.

Cherish Memories

This morning when I checked updates from friends in facebook, one of my schoolmates uploaded photos of group photos when we are attending high school. It's so strange looking back at those photos and seen how much everyone has changed. Everyone used to be so young, short, skinny and well...nerdy.

It was a small town so everyone looks weird including myself. Did we actually dress like that? Wore that? hmmm...it does bring a lot of happy memories and we have no worries and stress free. It just school and books. It feels like heaven now when I think of it. Life was so much happier and easier. Back then, a bunch of us study smart but not study hard. Yup, this culture has already existed long time ago. I think I'm the lasiest one when it comes to memories books because I don't and don't know how. I tried but I can't memories book. Nonetheless, everyone turn our ok and we excel in our exam and career.

This morning, when I look back the photos, I really missed the time and it's so much harder to find friends like them. Over the years, everyone move on with their lives and started families. We still stay in touch and I believe we will be life long friends. Cherish your friends.

Best Friend Drifting Apart

The topic during my ride to office was about best friend drifting apart. She was telling me her story when she had to take care of all her 13 family members, being the sole bread winner. Whenever the festive season month such as Chinese New Year's approaching, she will have to manage her salary well in order to buy all her brothers, sisters and parents new clothes and food items for the festival. Everytime, she will ended up no money to buy anything for herself. She told me luciky she has 2 best friends from work who will new year apparrel for her, without fell every year. Aunty said they drifted apart when she decided to work in Singapore. She said she has no choice because she needed the money to support her family. Since then, she and her best friends drift apart and after a while, they didn't contact each others anymore.

What causes 2 best friends to drift apart considering there was never a fight or quarrel? Well, I guess most friendships and best friends are based on a mutually beneficial relationship. You enjoy each other's company, enjoying doing similar things, having the same goal and interests and these make your friendship grow. Unfortunately, nothing stands still. Once the priorities, interests and needs change, 2 best friends will start drifting apart. Subsequently, both friends change. No matter how you want to keep and hold that friendship, it will never be the same once change.

Life long friends are thoses whom we can relate growing up with, sharing a common experience and can't be shared with new friends made. These are the friends you will keep in touch for years down the lane. Unfortunately, friends come and go too often. I guess when our goals change, so does friendship.

Like my friend said, close friends never last long, and it's truth. I took me a while to understand but I do now. Along our life's journey, we have to make new friends and look for new close friends. Best friends are difficult to find and I think that's why we have a lot of casual friends or just colleagues. Once the purpose of the casual friendship is complete, the friendship dissolves.

To some people, loosing a best friend due to drifting apart can be hurtful and sad but it's part of life growing. Even for me, I've lost a few best friends and it's so much harder to find a replacement. My best friend back in school has her own friends now. My best friends from university have migrated. My close friends from previous company are married and have different goals now. My best friend now is...well I don't know. I guess objectives change. Among all my friends, I'm lucky that I have 1 friend who has been with me for 10 years and still stay the same. We have our problems along the way but somehow we keep coming back to each other and for this, I say THANK YOU.

Moody Monday

Hmm...somehow this morning I woke up feeling crappy. Maybe it's because I didn't have my beauty sleep last night and woke up with a sore neck. Time to put my pillows under the Sun for a 'sun bath'. Last week one of my pioneer colleague last day and the office was a bit gloomy mood. It's sad to see him go because he's one of the pioneer when my office started about 2 years ago. I think it affect my friend too because he was all sensitive and moody for the past few weeks. As a friend, I guess I have to be patience. I'm not sure what's going on his mind and I have to be the one who's calm. Today he's on leave so the office feels much more lonely.

Well, life goes on. One day, we will have to end a good working relationship and move on to the next company. Sometimes it's difficult too when you're so used to working with your colleagues and adapt to the company culture... that somehow it makes you feel afraid to leave.

Pork Free is not consider as Halal

I'm very surprise that some Malaysians don't know that pork free is not  consider Halal to Muslim. All this while, I understand if someone from Hong Kong doesn't understand the meaning of Halal and thought that as long as no pork is serve in the food, it will be fine for Muslim friends. There was once I tried to explain to our vendor during a visit to Hong Kong because with me there were a few Muslim colleagues.

Just a few days ago, I realised that some Malaysians don't understand that pork free is not consider Halal. Although the shop doesn't serve pork, the ingredients for cooking and the way the chicken is prepared are some of the basic requirements to consider. I'm not a Muslim but I know the chicken must the prepare correctly from the slaughter to how the chicken is cook and serve. The ingredients used to cook all food in the restaurant must be Halal too. If you put a drop of wine in your cooking, it's consider non-halal to Muslim.

During this Ramadan month, let's be considerate to our Muslim friends. To all my Muslim friends and Sugar, Selamat Berpuasa.

Canon EOS550D Kit II EF S18-135 IS

Well, after so many DSLR launched, I've finally made up my mind and got a Canon EOS 550D kit II. I've stopped photo shooting for a very long time and my friend recently told me that my skills gone wasted. I'm not sure if I still have the skills but my passion for good photos never dies.

In my job, I have to know what's the tech and gadget trend and access to special gadget prices. One of my friend told me I don't know how to ultilise my connections but I think the trust built shouldn't be exploited or our friendship will end up like the Trojan War.

Canon 550D is truly a great buy and worth your money. This camera will appeal to first-time DSLR buyers and enthusiasts, it offers a lot more technology. Although it might seem logical for the 550D to replace the EOS 500D, the older camera is set to continue in Canon's lineup, which leaves the 550D pinched between its entry-level (represented by the still-current EOS 1000D and the 500D) and nominally enthusiast (the EOS 50D) peers. The 550D has more in common with the prosumer EOS 7D, and somehow it out-specifies the EOS 50D in many areas.

Central to the impressive specification of the EOS 550D is a high-spec movie mode which offers full HD capture at up to 30 fps, manual control over exposure, and the option to use an external stereo microphone. The new camera also inherits the EOS 7D's sophisticated metering system.

I like EOS 550D excellent imaging performance. It has 18 megapixels APS-C sized CMOS sensor for high resolution images of superb quality and details and Auto Lighting Optimizer function with 4 settings (Standard, low, strong and disable) that can analyzes the brightness of the photographic subject, and automatically corrects the dark parts to make them brighter. Besides that, the flexible setting of ISO speed to adjust camera’s sensitivity to light for best exposure from ISO 100 to 6400. The versatile zoom lens - EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is a powerful all-in-one lens for EOS EF-S mount bodies. It features a 4-stop Image Stabilizer and a 7.5x super zoom range (approx. 29-216mm equivalent focal length). The lens covers a wide range of focal lengths with a 0.45m minimum focusing distance. A general-purpose zoom, it is ideal for me who doesn't want to carry so many lens.
