It's That Time Of The Year Again...

The start of 2008 and it's time for performance evaluation for the work done in 2007. How time flies. This year I have to do evaluation for 36 staff under my department. This year the evaluation form is different because the group company standardise it and it makes it harder for anyone to achieve level 5 (highest score). I for one don't believe that just because a company overall didn't get level 5, the whole employees don't deserve it. There are a handful of staff whom I believe deserve a level 5 performance because they have done their best and went the extra miles to get the job done without a hipcup.

I don't believe that if the boss doesn't get a level 5, all his/her team members and staff are not entitle for a good performance. That's not how I was trained during my earlier years in managament. This is what I call a typical Malaysian culture in management. Even though I reaised that I won't be getting raving reviews because of the company's performance last year, I refuse to follow the rules that prevent me grading my deserving staff an excellent review for 2007. There are not many staff who is willing to go extra miles, having sense of ownership and urgency and an attention to details. They were willing to learn and change for the better. It's wrong to take way what they deserve. I would still reward them accordingly and they work hard for it.

I have yet to see what 2008 will brings me. However, nothing will be better if I don't move forward and took initiative to find better ways to inprove my financial, career and personal life. My friends have highlighted to me 2 things that I wanted to do but have yet to even start it. One is losing weigh and second, is restart my freelance services. I have stop these things for 2 years now. I think ever since I started work in my current company. To pick up again will take some time because I have to do all the initial work again. Anyway, I'm looking forward to it because I will have a nice study room soon.

A Shitty Day

With all the commotions that going around me right now, I decided to use some Chinese Proverb to express my situation before I go nuts!

Different Dreams on the Same Bed
It is a reality that even the closest people, husband and wife, will dream different dreams. That means, people are never alike in their minds. The connotation is that you got to be wary of even the people you trust the most; - how true this is. Each time I think that someone is helping me, but in the end I have to do it alone.

Flowing Water Never Stale
It means that people has to improve their knowledge in order not to stay behind; - I feel stupid after working in a lay-back environment and out-dated internal business process for a year.

Good Fortune or Bad Luck?
Do not overjoy over good fortune and saddened over a bad luck. There are always the unforeseeable turns for the better or worse; - I have yet to see any along my path.

Frog and the Sky
There is an argument between a bird who stopped to drank at a well and a frog therein. They were arguing about how the sky looked like. Regarding where they were, they each had a different view. The frog's vision was of course very limited. Therefore, this proverb refers to somebody who has a very narrow-minded and insulated view of what they see or what they think; - how true of a situation I'm in now. Can I excape from it?

Pierce Ears At Wedding
It is a criticism of procrastination. Like a bride who waited till the last munite to get things done that should have been done earlier. It also has the connation that it might be too late to wait till the last munite; - I've put off certain things and am regretting it.

An Inch of Gold for an Inch of Time
Disregard the different use of unit words describing nouns in different cultures. This proverb tells the truth that time is more valuable than money. Money spent or lost can be earned; time lost is lost for good. No money can buy it back. The motto is that we got to make good use of our time; - If I have choose time instead of saving cost, things won't be so mess up. Cheap doesn't mean good service and I should have known that.

Hasty Dish of Carrot Unclean
When hurry through a job it is impossible to attend to the minute details; - Is this my fault when project was rush to saved the event that was falling apart. At the time, delivery was more important. Have I make mistake for not following the company's long list of red tapes?

Dismantle Bridge and Kill Donkey
Isn't that ungrateful and mean? There are people who after taking advantage of you turn their back to you; - Jackpot!

Fast for Fear of Choking
You can't refuse to do the thing you need to just because there is a slight chance to fail; - It's part of my responsibility. Even though I raise my case for disaaproval and voice my concern of the incorrect method used, end of the day, I still have to carry out orders set to me.

More Dreams In Longer Night
The longer we stay in a disadvantagous position, the more risks we'll take; - Not only at the disadvantage but I am a lone ranger at my quest.

Three Monks Go Thirsty
It is a scenario where lack of individual initiative could breed dependent upon each other so that the more people the lesser things are done; - I'm surrounded by many.

Sesame Seed vs Watermelon
Concentrate on small matters to the expense of more important ones; - Everyday I am cleaning up petty issues and not focusing on the big picture. The petty issues also rob my personal time on personal matters.

A Rabbit Has Three Openings to Home
To succeed you got to have several alternatives; - I never learnt. I'm now in a situation where I don't have choices.

Wait for Rabbit to Die to Catch It
What is the chance? You must act instead of waiting to get things done; - I've ignore my personal task that it's now in a mess. I have to start cleaning and resolve personal tasks.

No Rice, No Wife to Cook
It may not be true to American housewives who seldom cook rice. But rice is staple food in South China where the proverb may have originated. Without the right material, no matter how good you are, you may not accomplish the task; - Nothing can be accomplished without the right staff and helps.

The Ends of a Sugar Cane
You have to balance it out: In order to get something, you have to sacrifice something else; - Can't I have both? Which is more important? Career or personal health and time?

Length of Ten Fingers
That is true. And that is true with life: we can't expect everything or everybody is perfect; - Lastly, I can't expect everything can be done perfect and nobody is perfect. If I want to get things done, I have to rely on myself.

A few months ago, there were a number of articles and cases on the paper about money scam by overseas culpits. They have a few tactics such as sending email about giving a large unclaim fund, send sms informing you have won a grand lottery prize etc. Some fell into the scam and ends up losing a lot of their hard earn cash. New opportunities

This year started off not bad. I went for an interview last week and it was a success. I am called for the second interview next week to meet the decision maker. I will have to sell myself and hoprfully to get a better increment. It has been years that I am under paid for the amount of work and responsibilities I handled. Now, it's high time I asked what I deserved. I've yet to decide anything because I still have to weigh the pay and the infridge benefits I received in my current work place. I motto now is, if you want me to sacrifice my life and time in work, the pay must be good!

Call me stupid but I also have to think about my CD. I pull him into this current work place and I feel responsible to take him with him when I leave. He's great in his work and an asset to any company. Being selfish, I'm not leaving him and giving away his talent to someone else. When I seek advice from my friend, she said I should go if they are willing to pay what I ask for. Furthermore, it's better to work in a smaller company because things get done faster and easier. No much of red tape and step-by-step process that make ordering a toner took 5 months!

Even steps of calling telephone company to fix our phone lines need to go though procuement process! Anyway, I have yet decide anything but I need $$$$$ so that will be the main weighing option.

Malaysia Boleh

This was a joke I heard during a dinner last night.

American wants to be more technology advance than other countries. So they dig the soil. When they reached 100 mil meters deep, they found something look like a wire. so American concluded that they has started telecommunication 100 years ago. British upon hearing this is not happy. So they, too dig their soil. 100 mil meters, nothing was found. Dig further. When they reached 200 mil meters, they found something thiner than a wire. The British concluded that they started fiber optic 200 years ago. We are Malaysia Boleh. So our people also dig our soil. 100 mil meters, nothing. 200 mil meters, nothing. 300 mil meters, nothing. We concluded that Malaysia started mobile 300 years ago!

Hahahaha....

The Year Started With a Twist - 2008

2007 ended with a few demonstrations or gatherings as our politians or police called it. We have the BERSIH, the Hindraf and freedom of rights gathering. I'm sure all have good intention and somehow it didn't turn out as peaceful as said. Easier said than done. Or was it media playing tricks? Then, we have the ISA and a few 'vocal' people were arrested. Then we have the memorandam from other NGOs who wants peace and object to street demo. I, for one agreed with this. Hasn't we seen and read enough from TV, newspapers about such violents in other countries? Even our neighbouring countries? Haven't we seen the result of such action towards our economic and social, its impact to our nation, her people? Maybe our generations wanted a taste of our fore-father struggles? To start all over again? I do't want it. I don't want to loose the comfort live I have. The racial harmony I have with my friends, the gathering and hanging out with my multi-racial friends.

In my personal opinion, most of the gathering people, (what I seen on TV and newspapers) they look like people who had never travel to western countries. Take Australia for example. No doubt there are many Chinese living there. However, as a tourist, I hardly see school children from mix race hanging out together. You walk the street and you can see clearly. Even the suburbs they live are divided. You have the east side more for imigrants but not so poor, you have the north east for the rich, you have the south for imigrant but poorer and so on. We don't have North, East, West South and isn't this great?

Then we have the scandal in politician. A well known, and very capable politian was caught in DVD. Exposing his private life. He is a brave man to own up his mistake and it was long time ago. I can't help but feel that there is a strong helping hand by people in or within the politic. Next is the school fee. I feel that it's misleading. As a parent, when announcement was made that school is free, I think is logic to think that it is truly free. Not knowing that "additional" cost is not abolished. Guess it's true thaat nothing is free in this world. I never realised that nowadays is cost $150++ for a child to go to school. Maybe we should further cut down government wastage and pump those saving into schools. Then there is a oil shortage in a of the world biggest palm oil producing country - yeah, us. Finally but not least, we have the infamous flash flood. I still remember when I was in school, my teacher told us that Malaysia is the best place to live in the world because it didn't have flood, earth quarke, volcano and hurricane. Those were the days.

So, what's mt resolution this year? 1. Lost weight. I said this for the past 2 years but instead of loosing I gained. I'm the type that gain weight when I'm stress at work. As I move further up in the corporate ladder, it gets more stress. 2. Improve my health. Last year wasn't a healthy year for me. So I better care more about my health. Once I lost it, I lose everything. 3. Improve my financial. This mean less generous and more selfish. It's already the 9th day of 2008. Hope the year of rat brings a joyous, fruitful, healthy and peaceful year to everyone.
